While I was at karate, Kim woke early and started working out with Wii Fit. We both got a good workout this morning! When Kim was done with her routine, I tried the Body Test. I last did this at Jacquie and Steve’s house and was the only one to test with a body age lower than actual age. This time, the Wii’s creepy child computer voice had something against me.

I started the test and all was ok. My weight down from last time (400+ days ago) and a great center of balance. But it all went downhill from there. The first test was a one leg balance test. I waited for the test to start and lifted my leg. Immediately the test failed. It flashes up some encouraging words along the lines of “do you have a hard time walking?” I start getting tense and defensive. Piece of crap machine.

Then the next test is explained. I have to hold my center of balance on the board. This shouldn’t be too hard. I already showed it how well I could do that. The test starts counting down and the balance board loses power. Friggin Wii gives me instructions to restart the board. As soon as the board registers, the balance test begins where it left off…with me off the board. I jump on, but it is too late. I have already failed the test.

Then the stupid wii informs me that it will give me my body age. Hold on. Wait for it…it shows my little Mii in a spotlight. I can hardly stand the excitement.

70. My body age is 70. The wii is silently wondering if I am near death’s door.

I exclaim that this was a completely unfair test and resolve to re-do it immediately. Kim agrees and encourages me. I start over. Somehow I have gained nearly a pound since I took the previous test…5 minutes ago. It informs me that I am not proceeding towards my goal. I’m ready to kick the thing. I get to the test part again and the wii loses power and reboots the whole game. Kim is trying to be helpful, but I am losing patience. I do NOT want the last memory of my fitness recorded to be my 70 year body. We replace the batteries with Kim’s newest purchase, a power pack that is rechargeable. Of course, the wii loses power as soon as I get to the test again. Really? What have I ever done to it? Nothing, but I am secretly planning on exacting my revenge when it least expects it. Maybe it is sensing that.

I finally get to take the test again and it starts me on some of the weirdest tests I have seen. The “Walk in Place” test? I rhythmically step left and right and it counts every 5th step. It wonders back at me that I can even walk with the fact that I apparently have no right leg. Does it think I am hopping? I am hopping mad, however.

I do ok on the final test and get a fantastic result of a body age of 58. Now I am older than my mother. I guess it is better than being old enough to be her mother, but still. Kim tries to be positive and points out that I am a very attractive 58. hrmph.

Hopefully, the day will improve…

We finally drank the wine that I got from a colleague for christmas. It was well worth the wait.

I know Kim is thinking of ways around the TV ban, but I am loving the quality time. I finally got a blog up and running on our site and I am actually updating it frequently (thus this post). I figured out how to get MySQL set up on the site, too!

I’m hoping for a rousing game of backgammon to complete the night, but it is looking like the NYT crosswords will win out.

1/6 of the way through the month…we can do this!

On 11 September, following a long, courageous battle with cancer, Abby Wall went to heaven where she will smile, laugh, sing, dance and watch over her loved ones.
Abby was born Abigail Grace Shea on April 7, 1955 in Somerville, NJ. She met her husband, Bill, on a ski trip in Canada. They married in 1993 and she moved to Camp Hill to begin living the happiest and best years of her life with Bill at her side.
Abby spent 23 years working for AT&T. She also spent 7 years working at the Mechanicsburg Navy Depot. She was an avid skier, gardener, runner, golfer, biker, kayaker, reader and quilter. She enjoyed cooking, baking, bird watching and everything about making her house a home for herself and her husband. She loved doing stonework, both garden walls and walkways. She loved all things Irish and her favorite symbol was the shamrock. She found joy and satisfaction in most every sport, hobby and undertaking that she tried. Abby enjoyed life to it fullest. She and Bill shared most sports and interests together. They loved spending time and traveling with friends, who were like family to her. She loved children and animals. Two special boys, were William and Ben Nichols. They were like the grandchildren she never had and they made her heart smile.
Abby earned her Bachelor’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, NJ. She earned her degree in night school while working full time and graduated Summa cum laude in 1992. She was a member of Phi Zeta Kappa, Phi Omega Epsilon and Delta Mu Delta Honor Societies. She also earned a Horticulture certificate from Harrisburg Community College.
Her father, James Shea of Florence, Colorado, who died on March 1, 2008, predeceased Abby. In addition to her husband, William Wall, Abby is survived by her mother, Elizabeth Shea, of S. Bound Brook, NJ and two sisters, April Shea of S. Bound Brook, NJ and Susan Coyle and her husband Harry of Glassboro, NJ and their son, Josh. She is also survived by her mother-in law, Helen Wall of Walkersville, MD; her sister-in-law, Mary Cassidy, of Douglassville, PA and her daughters, Stacy and Tracy Prout and her husband Matt; her brother-in-law, Joe and his wife, Maureen of Royersford, PA, and their sons, Ryan and Corey; her sister-in-law, Patricia Arnold and husband Ed of Dillsburg, PA, and their children, Amanda and Chris, and also Dawn and Jerry; her sister-in-law, Kathy Brown of Oley, PA, and her children, Brian and Kelly Ortlip; and her brother-in-law, David of Lebanon, PA. Many great nieces and great nephews on the Wall side of the family also survive her. She was a Weller girl!

Kim and I have decided to perform a bit of a social experiment on ourselves. For the month of October, 2009, we are going to forgo TV. The goal is to see what we do without this crutch in our lives.

This idea began to form after a dear friend passed away a few weeks ago. At her service, friends and family filled the room with objects that had meaning in her life: quilts she made, her bike, skiis, gardening equipment. Kim and I joked that if this were our service, the only objects that would represent us are a sofa and a remote…maybe a laptop?

So we decided to find out what we would fill our days with if we eliminated TV from our daily routine.
